How to join a
FÔLD Reformer Pilates class

Joining a FÔLD Reformer Pilates class is easy. Find your nearest studio on our map, then get in touch with your chosen studio. You can also check out their website to see if they offer trial classes.

What to expect in class

All FÔLD studios use the FÔLD Original Reformer – and some even use our latest Easi-FOLD™ design. Apart from that, your Pilates class experience will vary from studio to studio, so it’s important to find the right fit for you.

You’ll want to think about what size of class works for you, whether you need a beginners class, if you’re looking for something more athletic and contemporary or something more classical.

The best way to do that is chat with your studio or browse their website to find their style.

Benefits of joining if you have a FÔLD bed

If you already have a FÔLD reformer at home, joining a class at a FÔLD studio will help you to strengthen your at home practice. You’ll learn new moves to take your fitness up a notch as well as maybe already having a head-start on how to use the kit in class.

Who is Reformer Pilates for?

As a low-impact exercise, Reformer Pilates is great for people who want to be gentle on their joints while building deep and targeted strength as they become more flexible and balanced throughout the body. It’s for everybody and all ages, and you don’t need to be flexible to start. (Though if you’ve never tried Reformer Pilates before, you may want to try a beginners class to start.)

What qualifications do the instructors have?

Studio instructors who qualify on a FÔLD course are endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). Other reputable Reformer Pilates qualifications come from awarding bodies including Balanced Body, Alan Herdman, Polestar, Body Control Pilates, BASI and STOTT.

Fold FAQs

  • Reformer Pilates is a low-impact exercise which focuses on building deep strength through targeted movement, with the help of a reformer bed. Pilates was originally created by Joseph Pilates as a form of rehabilitation but has now evolved to include matwork, tower and Reformer Pilates.

What makes Reformer Pilates different to the rest is that it’s done on a reformer bed. This is a static frame with a moving carriage, adjustable footbar, resistance springs and straps to help you get into a range of different poses to develop strength, flexibility, mobility and a balanced mind-body connection.

  • Reformer Pilates is great for strength, flexibility and core activation while also helping you with posture and general awareness of your body. It can be tailored to all fitness levels and you’ll find different styles across studios to suit how you best like to move.

  • The main difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates is the equipment. As the name suggests, Mat Pilates is ground-based using a non-slip mat and other props like Pilates rings and balls. Reformer Pilates is done on a reformer bed. You’ll still use Pilates rings and balls but maybe not as often as in Mat Pilates because of the choice of other props on the bed itself.

  • Yes, Reformer Pilates is safe for most people during pregnancy however it’s always best to speak to a midwife before getting started. A good Reformer Pilates teacher will be able to support you with modifications depending on which trimester you’re in.

For injuries, it’s a similar story. Depending on the nature of your injury, it’s important to chat with your doctor or physio before you start Reformer Pilates or before you come back after injury.

  • The most important things to wear in a Reformer Pilates class are grip socks. There are quite a few styles so choose what you prefer to wear - just make sure they have silicone or rubber dots on the bottom to stop you slipping on the reformer.

Apart from that, you’ll just want comfy clothes that don’t restrict your movement too much.

  • Reformer Pilates classes normally follow this format: a warm-up, two focus sequences on footwork and then upper, core or lower body. Then a cooldown. Classes usually last between 45 - 60 minutes.

  • While there are no set class levels in Reformer Pilates, you’ll likely see class levels in your chosen studio. These could be classes which are organised by ability, music type or style.

  • The easiest way is to get in touch with your chosen studio or take a look at their website. It’s quite common for studios to have classes labelled as ‘beginner’ or ‘beginner-friendly’ but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, reach out to the studio directly.
